Celebrate Literacy Award Recipient 2002
Lynnette Brunderman – Administrator Award
Lynnette Brunderman has been principal of Thornydale Elementary School in the Marana Unified School District for seven years. For the last five years she organized and attended a Family Story Time for six Thursday evenings each semester.
Family Story Time is open to our school community as well as the neighborhood community. Ms. Brunderman and other faculty members select and read stories with a specific theme or topic for each Story Time. The children attending have the opportunity to “read” a book from home to the audience. Children who read aloud to the audience then pick out a new book to keep for their very own.
The audience usually consists of preschool and primary students along with their parents. The older students who attend are “alumni” from previous years of our Family Story Time. Many of the preschoolers and their parents attend as a result of their neighbors sharing their experiences. The attendance at community events at Thornydale has increased due to this wonderful first exposure to our school.
The joy of reading and sharing books in the Thornydale neighborhood has had a tremendous boost since Lynnette has come into our lives.
