Education and commitment to change must continue over the long haul to be effective. That is just what Arizona Reading Association has done concerning the Guatemalan Project over the last ten years! Our goals remain the same... |

Provide customers for beautiful hand-crafted items made by the ladies of the Guatemalan village of Xetonox. |
Send scholarships for girls in order to keep them in school and help families value education to give their children a better way of life. |
Use profits from the sale of Guatemalan products to supply books, educational items, and provide tutoring services to help older students. |
Our TARGET AUDIENCE remains the students of our little school and the ladies in the village of Xetonox. |

This year we continue to send scholarships from our councils to benefit girls. One of the recipients is very close to graduation, and she intends to continue her studies to become a teacher and help others in her village with their education. |

At the Arizona State Reading Conference in fall 2001, our sales of Guatemalan products totaled $2,084. $1400 was immediately returned for the Maya Works Weaving Centers. This left $684 additional monies raised for Xetonox school projects. The school Council requested the following items: |
Basic school supplies for the children: $190 (community will add $60) |
Typewriters for older students: $250 (community will add $125) |
Large bowls for the moms to use as they prepare morning snacks for the children: $165 (community will add $85) |
The remaining $79 will be used for basketball hoops, popular for both boys and girls! |
Arizona's important work of literacy for these special children continues... |
